Ubiquity

Let me Introduce you to a Mozilla Firefox Addon, Ubiquity. A very handy utility that helps you simplify your tasks during your life in the internet. Command triggered actions can be performed using this tool. This both is fun and very effective. For example if you find some long bad, unknown word in the internet, dont fret, just select the word and ask ubiquity to define it and there you go. Have an address on the webpage and want to know where it exactly is??  Just ask him to Map it for you, he will be more than glad to do so also will it enable you to insert the section of the map into an email and draft it to your friend without ever needing to type another URL in the address bar. U have more adresses??  no worries he is more efficient taht way select everything and say 'map these' and voila there you go.  This make being at many places in one time very possible.
Some more on what it can do,
  • Can update your twitter status - This is something i like to do very often as this is very practical and quick.
  • Can ask for a WIKIPEDIA article
  • Can edit a page
  • Can add events to your Google Calendar.
  • Can Digg an article directly.
  • Can search in flickr.
  • Can do many more. Check out . Link

The Thumbnail Challenge

I recently received a mail saying “Crack It” in the subject line sent to me by one of my friends. The mail had an attachment named “Sweetgirl.jpg”. I was required to save that image into my computer and to see its thumbnail from the saved folder.

I was totally amazed to see that the thumbnail image was the same girl with some other person. This was a little new to me. So out of curiosity, I opened the jpg file with notepad. It was just ordinary. Then I found out that it had some encoding labels that said EXIF and JFIF.They made me more curious. Hence, I googled for these two abbreviations and found out more.

I’ll put the essence that relates to the challenge in hand. The JFIF and EXIF are encodings that allow you to add some information to the image concerned like the author name, the camera type etc. So its like adding signature to an Image. But this EXIF, had another data which can be encoded. It’s a thumbnail image specification. Meaning, a thumbnail can be added to the current image that needn’t be the same image but has to he hard coded into it. So I downloaded a tool called exiftool which had commands to do the same. And after several trial and errors, I had the result. I did it with the same image which was sent to me. I added one of my collection pics as the thumbnail and it worked fine.

The original image for u. Image

My version. Image

To Do :

1. Save the image to one of your folders.

2. Go to that folder and select View --> Thumbnails.

Now if you see that image, it will be different as a thumbnail. If you double click on the thumbnail, you will get the original image.

Check the details encoded in your Jpeg images here. Link.

VISUWORDS : The Graphical Dictionary

The VISUWORDS is a beautiful Online dictionary. The first thing that you notice is that its done gracefully. Its not just Text. It’s a graphical representation of the word and its different meanings. This can also be used as a thesaurus. All the words are linked with several other words which in turn are linked with others. The total setup is very friendly to handle. Once you type a word into the input box, you get the word in the pane and then one by one, the related words Pop up and they form a mesh. Then if you are interested in the linked words, double click on them and the process continues with that word as the center. So you will have a huge mesh to work with. You can click and drag the background to pan around. When you hover over the nodes, the descriptions are shown. The definition of the connection between nodes is clearly given in the page as a legend.

Visuwords™ uses Princeton University’s WordNet, an opensource database built by University students and language researchers. Combined with a visualization tool and user interface built from a combination of modern web technologies, Visuwords™ is available as a free resource to all patrons of the web.

I love the way it spreads out the nodes and gives you the info.Link

GENI : Create Your Family Tree

Geni is a Free Family tree site that I came across recently. It a great new website that helps families create and share their family tree and stay in touch with each other.

Here's how Geni works:

# You start by entering your name and email address. Then, just click the yellow arrows to add your relatives!

# You can invite a relative to join the tree by entering their email address. That relative can add and invite other relatives so your tree will continue to grow!

So its sort of a team work from You and your relatives. Its very interactive and Useful in many ways. I would recommend this site for all. Especially, make the young ones do all the work, this way, they will know their family and relations. Also, you can keep in touch with all people in your tree, birthday alerts can be used and many more positive outcomes than negative ones. Also you can spend some time in creating it and integrating it. Totally its FUN.

FYI : My tree has 74 people in it.
